NATURE OF WORK:

Under supervision, performs work of average difficulty in providing correctional casework services to assigned probationers and conducts pre-sentence/pre-disposition investigations; performs work as required or assigned.

TYPICAL DUTIES: (Illustrative Only)

Supervises a group of assigned probationers and/or out-of-county/state probationers; checks daily activities to assure compliance with terms of probation; conducts interviews and research for the preparation of pre-sentence/pre-disposition and supplemental reports; counsels clients or refers them to various social agencies; meets with parents, counselors, employers, teachers and other to assess probationer’s progress; conducts risk/needs assessments; develops case plans; conducts urinalysis examinations; visits probationers at home, work or in treatment facilities; arranges for counseling appointments; attends various staffing as needed, including but not limited to Drug Court, Solutions Court, IEP’s and CFT’s; enforces terms and conditions of probation; investigates alleged violations of probation and arrests probationers if warranted; makes recommendation to the Court; testifies in Court.

  • Principles of human behavior;
  • Criminal Justice System and community resources.

  • Computers and Office Equipment;

  • Interpersonal relationships and interviewing;
  • Report writing.

Abilities to:

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, probationers, other agencies and the public;

  • Follow written and verbal instructions;
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing;
  • Apply the principles and methods of correctional casework;
  • Analyze and evaluate home situations and family conflicts;
  • Work rotating shifts, weekends and holidays (subject to 24/7 call out);

Successfully complete the Defensive Tactics Academy and Probation/IPS Officer Academy within one year of hire.

CONDITION OF WORK:

Work is subject to various post or job site assignments, which may include working and/or driving in inclement weather and may be subject to call-back or on-call status and irregular schedules to include completion of work assignments on weekends and holidays.  Possible exposure to combative situations and abusive language.  Some risk of injury due to exposure to possibly violent or short-tempered individuals.  May occasionally be exposed to bodily fluids, communicable diseases and involves occasional light to moderate lifting.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Per Arizona Code of Judicial Administration, Part 6 Probation, Chapter 1 General Administration, Section 6-106 Personnel Practices, F. 3. all probation officers shall be a United States Citizen or have legal resident status and possess the following:   F.3. (a) At minimum, a bachelor’s degree with a preference in the behavioral sciences or a related field from an accredited college or university; F.3. (b) minimum age of 21 years.

Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona driver’s license.  Successfully complete a background investigation, to include no felony convictions.  Shall be required to successfully complete examinations or tests to include psychological, drug testing, finger printing and physical prior to appointment and/or during employment.

This position pays annually $46,352-$72,722 (Salary commensurate with experience)
